The Mountain Of Ice

A small cosy village once sat on a big ledge attached to a tall, icy mountain of ice. All villagers feared the mountain. One day a brave 8-year-old girl and her friends were up for adventure and started packing for scaling up the icy mountain.

As they got higher an arctic fox joined them. Suddenly they stopped at a fork of two paths. “Which track should we go through?” asked Chloe, one of Olivia's friends.
“I think we should go right, not left,” replied Olivia.

When they started walking again, they heard a loud CRASH and the four friends rushed back to the fork. “We’re trapped!” cried Sarah.

“We’ll be ok as long as we’re together,” said Ashley in a soothing voice. Olivia scooped up the arctic fox which was now asleep and rushed back to her friends. Soon they heard a loud ROAR that woke the arctic fox up and a yeti holding a pickaxe appeared!

Alex's Mountain Story

The Big Journey to the Top
Once upon a time, there was an 18 year-old boy called Alex. He lived in a village just at the foot of a steep and snowy mountain. There were 20 chests and a golden trophy up there.

One day, he got up the courage to scale the mountain. He took a backpack with food and a tent. Then, he started to climb the stairs. The stairs had snow on them which made them very slippery. When he finished climbing the stairs, he started to climb the most grueling part.

He had to use special equipment to climb. When he got to the top, there were a bunch of yetis with guns guarding the chests and the trophy. He had to try and find a way to get around the yetis without being spotted! Then, he got a great idea, there were some stairs next to the yetis. He crouched down low and over the stairs. When he got behind the yetis, he could take the chests and trophy! He slowly put the chests and trophy into his backpack.

When he was about to put the last 2 chests into his bag, a yeti suddenly turned around and saw him! The yeti aimed his gun at him. Alex was scared, the yeti fired his gun at him. Luckily, Alex jumped right out of the way from the speeding bullet. Alex quickly put the last 2 chests in his bag and quickly went down the mountain, safe at last.

Safety with Electricity

We had a visit from Esther who works with Vector, the company that gets electricity to our homes through power lines. We learned some important things to help keep us safe. Students should be able to locate the mains power switch at their house and know how to turn it off in the case of an emergency.

Some students wore the safety gear that lines technicians use when they are working on the underground or overhead lines.

Mandarin

On Monday, we tried some Chinese paper cutting. Following the instructions from Miss Han the Mandarin teacher, we folded a piece of paper, drew some lines and cut some of the paper out. We made the Chinese symbol for happiness. Come to the class and see how they turned out.

Matthew's Mountain Story

Today Matthew wrote an imaginative story. The inspiration was a photo of a dark and foreboding snow-covered mountain.

Get NZ Writing

On Wednesday, the class opened a package sent from another school. We had received a poster and some postcards. This is part of the Get NZ Writing programme which helps students in New Zealand write and swap their writing with another class, somewhere in the country.

Room 17 had made our own poster and postcards with Mrs Cammell which we sent off to our buddy class. The postcards were decorated on the back and made a poster when arranged in a particular way.

Maths

Today in maths we played a game that helps us develop place value ideas and order 2-digit numbers. The game is below. You can download the page here and play at home or draw a rocket on paper and play.

2-Digit Rocket Game
The aim of the game is to fill every floor of the rocket with numbers in order.
If a player cannot place a number they have thrown, they miss that turn.
Players take turns to roll a dice twice. From the numbers thrown, the students decide which 2-digit
number they will use.
For example, if five and three are thrown, the student could use 53 or 35.

The students then record the number on a level of the rocket where they think it best fits between 10 and 67.
Once a number is written it cannot be moved.
